In DIE WELT one could read that the Germans are currently living in a land of plenty. And that is not good. The term „sluraff“ derives from the Middle High German and means as much as idlers, or the „Land of the lazy monkeys“ (Wikipedia). These days we can hear and read: We are role model: export champion, we have almost full employment and a budget surplus. On the other hand, economic experts are about to warn that this is not a permanent condition and does not function everywhere in Europe. That’s right. According to PISA study, Germans are not the most educated people. And education is our primary asset. Natural resources are rare in our country. We neglect education, have an oversupply of teachers and take on career changers instead. At the same time we have too many unemployed people and suffer from a lack of qualified personnel. We need to invest more in education, otherwise we can not maintain our economic standard. Economic growth does not come from laziness.

Schlaraffenland
