Federalism! Since the Second World War, this word is the talk of the town. In Germany, the Allies have promoted federalism in order to prevent a central power. They did not trust the Germans! In Switzerland federalism exists since 150 years. What you can do on a small scale, should not burden the federal government. Actually a good idea: the general government is supposed to take care of the big things, the cantons and the federal states care for the rest. One is poltically committed, local pride and local ties motivate the citizens. Viewed differently, the question arises whether small administrative units are still up-to-date within the bounds of Europe. Should they carry on as usual in Berlin and Brandenburg? Do we really need federal states such as Bremen and Saarland? That costs tons of money we do not have anymore. „Lean administration“ is propagated quite some time now! Recently voices are being raised also in Switzerland, if there has to be the one or the other mini-canton. In addition to the savings effect in the consolidation of smaller units we could reach more consensus in decision-making. There are less to join the discussion. But do we really want one to define what to do?!

Föderalismus! Seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg ist dieses Wort in aller Munde. In Deutschland haben die Alliierten den Föderalismus forciert, um eine Zentralmacht zu verhindern. Man traute den Deutschen nicht! In der Schweiz gibt es den Föderalismus schon seit 150 Jahren. Was man im Kleinen erledigen kann, soll den Bund nicht belasten. Eigentlich eine gute Idee: der Gesamtstaat soll sich um die großen Dinge kümmern, den Rest machen die Kantone bzw. Bundesländer. Man ist engagierter, Lokalpatriotismus und Heimatverbundenheit motivieren die Bürger. Anders gesehen stellt sich die Frage, ob die kleinen Verwaltungseinheiten überhaupt noch zeitgemäß sind im Zuge Europas. Muss wirklich in Berlin und Brandenburg jeder sein Eigenes machen? Muss es Bundesländer wie Bremen und das Saarland geben? Das kostet Unmengen an Geld, das wir nicht mehr haben. „Schlanke Verwaltung“ wird schon seit Längerem propagiert! Auch in der Schweiz werden mittlerweile Stimmen laut, ob es noch den einen oder anderen Mini-Kanton geben muss. Neben dem Spareffekt bei Zusammenlegung kleinerer Einheiten könnte man auch mehr Einigkeit bei der Entscheidungsfindung erreichen. Es reden nicht mehr so viele mit. Aber wollen wir das wirklich, dass uns einer vorgibt, was zu tun ist?!
